5.3.7 Funding Innovation in Transmission Distribution and Storage

LPDD Recommendation: Congress, FERC, DOE, or states can fund additional research, technology, and development on a range of distribution network and smart grid developments, including energy storage.

New Mexico’s HB 50 (2020)

Providing that transmission line projects qualify for industrial revenue bonds available through cities and municipalities, and supporting power lines that promote renewable energy development.

NYSERDA smart grid development funding

Including a $15 million Future Grid Challenge, $30 million into the High Performing Grid program, and $5 million specifically to support research on integrating renewable energy onto the grid.

DOE’s Joint Center for Energy Storage Research

In September 2018, the Department of Energy committed $120 million over five years to support the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, which devoted to advancing battery science and technology.
