Airlines for America, the trade group representing all of the major U.S. airlines along with cargo giants UPS and FedEx, announced in March 2021 that its members are committing to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Past airline efforts to decarbonize have largely focused on carbon offsets, but A4A’s plans revolve around sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF. The airlines said they’ll work with the government toward a goal of producing 2 billion gallons of SAF by 2030.
