The USDA’s 2014 report, Biogas Opportunities Roadmap: Voluntary Actions to Reduce Methane Emissions and Increase Energy Independence, identifies voluntary actions that can be taken to reduce methane emissions through the use of biogas systems and outlines strategies to overcome barriers to a robust biogas industry in the United States. The Roadmap found that with the proper support, the country could go from 2,000 to more than 13,000 biogas systems, producing enough energy to power more than 3 million American homes and reducing methane emissions equivalent to 4 to 54 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2030. The Roadmap considers areas for federal action, including promoting biogas through existing agency programs, fostering investment, strengthening markets, and improving coordination.
