California’s Sustainable Communities and Climate Protection Law (S.B. 375) requires MPOs to prepare strategies to meet GHG targets, and requires each MPO to develop a sustainable communities strategy that includes not only transportation strategies but also steps such as promoting more compact development. An NRDC report on the implementation of S.B. 375 found that the law has prompted regional plans that substantially increase funding for cleaner transportation alternatives and that are projected to alleviate traffic congestion, boost more compact, mixed-use development, and slash GHG emissions.
