The City of Cupertino adopted an electrification ordinance in late 2019 to align with the city’s climate action plan to reduce carbon emissions 83% by 2050. It applies to residential and commercial new construction and includes the exterior of new buildings such as outdoor pools, spas and barbecues, as well as Accessory Dwelling Units. The ordinance does not include commercial F, H, and L occupancies; additions and tenant improvements in commercial buildings; and kitchens in commercial buildings, though pre-wiring for each gas appliance is required. Pre-wire provisions include the reserved space in the electric panel, conductors, receptacles, and junction boxes.
