The District of Columbia’s Green Building Act (2006) required green building certification in both the public and private sector. The District’s Construction Codes (2013) expanded to cover projects beyond the scope of the Green Building Act, and requires new buildings to be as much as 30% more efficient than the 2006 version of the IECC. In 2014, the District ranked first in the nation among large cities for LEED certified projects and ENERGY STAR certified buildings.
