Devens, MA’s Industrial Performance Standards for Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Projects state that industrial sources that require an air quality permit must have a vegetated roof that covers at least
40% of the roof. The roof must be designed in compliance with the Policy for Construction of Vegetated Roofs.
The Policy for the Construction of Vegetated Roofs requires that when building a green roof, a member of the construction team must be a Green Roof Professional (GRP). The policy requires that the vegetation on the roof not be an invasive species, and that it must be native plants with seeds appropriate to Devens’ USDA hardiness zone (5b). Green roofs shall have a minimum of 4 inches of growing media that cover 40% of the roof area, with at least 80% coverage within three years of the
date they are planted.
