EPA’s Coalbed Methane Outreach Program works cooperatively with coal companies to reduce methane emissions through recovery and utilization programs. CMOP provides mine-specific information and technical assistance to the coal mining industry and project developers, including identifying project sites, analyzing and demonstrating technologies, conducting mine-specific project pre-feasibility assessments and market evaluations, and analyzing financial incentives and regulatory hurdles. EA estimates the program has helped reduce CO2-e emissions by 7 million metric tons in 2017, and 1999 million metric tons since program inception in 1994. They have published several case studies across four different methane reduction project types.
