The 2016 Good Farming Practice Determination Standards Handbook, for the first time, stated that practices promoted by the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service would generally be recognized as “good farming practices,” which opens the door the farmers using a variety of climate-friendly NRCS practices without voiding their eligibility for federal crop insurance. Further expansion of this standard would help widen the scope of decarbonizing strategies that farmers can economically practice. In 2019, the Handbook specifically noted the NRCS’s cover crop guidelines would qualify.
