Discount rates are an important factor in determining the comparative value of nuclear power. The IEA’s 2015 edition of Projected Costs of Generating Electricity studied 22 countries and found that at a discount rate of 10 percent, the median cost of both natural gas and coal was lower than nuclear energy, while at a discount rate of 3 percent, nuclear energy was the most economical option in all countries analyzed.
