Portland OR’s metropolitan government approved a 2018 ordinance that requires certain businesses to separate and divert food waste. Metro’s Business Food Waste Requirement requires that local jurisdictions within the Metro region adopt policies requiring covered businesses (including those that serve or prepare substantial amounts of food) in their jurisdiction to source-separate and collect food waste and send it to an authorized facility. Local jurisdictions must inform businesses of the ordinance, provide outreach and technical assistance, and develop a mechanism for enforcing the business food waste requirement.
