In 2001, the Minnesota Legislature created an incentive program that annually pays enrolled landowners $7 per acre of forested land to offset property taxes. Known as the sustainable forest incentive program, eligible landowners must enroll at least 20 contiguous acres of forestland, agree to follow an approved forest management plan and record a covenant pledging not to develop the land.
