End of Life Vehicle Solutions is a national not-for-profit corporation formed by automobile manufacturers providing educational materials, collecting and recycling automotive switches at no cost to dismantlers and recyclers. In 2006 a coalition of federal, State, industry, and environmental nonprofit partners created the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program, a voluntary effort to remove mercury switches from End of Life Vehicles before they are shredded for recycling. The Program was extended in 2018. New York State law requires that shredders and dismantlers remove mercury switches from vehicles prior to processing. Iowa’s 2006 Mercury Free Recycling Act establishes a program for the recycling of mercury switches removed from end-of-life vehicles.
