NREL has prepared a 2013 report, Solar Development on Contaminated and Disturbed Lands, which examines the prospect of developing utility-scale solar power on degraded and environmentally contaminated lands. The report concludes that the levelized cost of energy is lower in the Southwest US, and identifies fifty of the largest sites in the country for photovoltaics and concentrated solar.
