San Mateo’s electric reach code does not require all-electric new construction, but incentivizes it through increased energy efficiency requirements for new buildings that use gas. Office buildings with gas would need to be 10% better than the statewide 2019 building code requirements. Single-family and duplex multifamily buildings with gas would need to be at least 2.5 Energy Design Rating points less than the 2019 building code’s baseline. The ordinance also adds additional rooftop photovoltaic and electric vehicle charging requirements.
